Why Apple maybe forced to change the name iPhone to “iFone”

January 19, 2007 |

When Apple announced IPhone at Macworld, the executives of Cisco most likely choked on whatever they were eating. The name iPhone was originally trademarked by Infogear dating back to 1996. Cisco obtained the rights after it purchased Infogear back in 2000. The original “iPhone” product is being sold for over a decade now.

Check out http://www.linksys.com/iphone for more info about this product. Even though I haven’t used one but it seems this phone has cooler features than Apple’s iPhone. Makes you wonder, if you search for “iphone” on amazon.com, does Apple’s iPhone show up first or the original one? Some people might end up buying the wrong one. Can it happen? Sure can. Unless either Cisco or Apple changes the name to something else. I can already see many people bidding on this on eBay to find out they got the wrong one that looks like a Phone from 10 years ago.

Other than the bad look of Cisco’s iPhone, it’s got some neat features. The only advantage I see on Apple’s is that it looks pretty good, that’s about it. The disadvantages of Apple’s iPhone isn’t much, but they’re major. For example, why in the world would they not allow changing of battery? Or allow addition of more memory?? I suppose this maybe a marketing thing - they’ll keep improving the product so it sells for longer years…how else are they going to make lots of money? Back to the point of this article. If Cisco is successful on their suit against Apple, chances are you’ll be carrying a no name phone that look pretty cool.

Have you recently checked out http://www.iphone.com/ ? Yes this is the Internet Phone Company. They own the domain. Do you think Apple is anxiously waiting for expiration of this domain? Rumors has it, they’ve offered owners of this domain a slick $2 mil. Believe it or not, it doesn’t matter. I’d sell it for $1 mil if I owned it. Anyway, will Apple use “iFone” as the name of their product? I doubt it, they’ll fight this one. There is a chance they’ll win the case too. Reason being? They could lose a market share if they go with a different name and for this reason they’ll throw whatever they can to win the case because they know, in the long run it would benefit them. Ever bought something very cool that was named iPot or Coby ? You wouldn’t, because it sounds like a 99 cent product from China!
