NAS is a dedicated hard disk-based storage devices. A NAS device provides users with additional disk storage available to LAN users through a standard network connection. You mount NAS via NFS on your Unix based systems or via CIFS/SMB on your Windows systems. It can be used to store all your data in one primary location.
The following are affordable list of NAS devices that you can probably use as your primary storage. You can put your websites on it, use it as an NFS server for your network or as a d2d (disk to disk) for quick and efficient backup and restore of your content.
I studied each of the manufacturer storage device based on price, performance and disk capacity. Above all, I made sure that Linux is the base operating system and can easily be configured via command line or web interface.
1) Aberdeen Inc. has high quality and affordable Linux based NAS. Their cheapest start from around $2800 to several thousand. However, if you contact the resellers, they’ll usually sell at discounted prices. Link to manufacture website: http://www.aberdeeninc.com/abcatg/AberNAS.htm
2) Allnet has a couple of decent deals as well prices ranging from as low as $245 for a 400GB storage. Check out their website for additional devices: http://www.allnet-usa.com/html/shop.php?kat=Network+Storage3)
3) LinkStation and TeraStation by Buffalo Tech - Large community of supporters. Many people use these NAS devices as their primary storage or for backup. It has storage ranging from 250GB to several terabytes, all with excellent prices. Visit the Buffalo Tech website at http://www.buffalotech.com/
4) FortuNAS 1u storage starts from $2500 for 1TB. There are also many lower end NAS devices which you can purchase. Products FortuNAS is listed at http://www.iscsi-raid.com and http://www.naszone.com/html/fortunas_models.html5) QNAP NAS Servers. Price ranging from a few hundred to several thousand.
5) QNAP is another company to produces cheap NAS. Visit http://www.qnap.com
6) Snap Appliance servers are probably the best out there. I use a couple of them in my server room. You can get1TB for less than $2000. Lower end NAS devices also available, visit http://www.adaptecstore.com.
Their devices are extremely easy to setup and maintain. Supports all RAID configurations.
7) Thecus High Performance NAS Servers. Check out their website at http://www.thecus.com/but I was able to find prices for them on http://www.newegg.com
Finally…I meant for this research to be productive but I don’t think it ended up that way. The reason being, it’s impossible to tell how these devices perform unless tested in a lab against real time data I/O. But I hope the above list would help you narrow down your choices if you’re looking for a NAS solution.
I was not able to list too many as majority of the vendors did not list the prices online. You can submit an inquiry via their website to receive a quote. However, if their prices aren’t listed on their website, most likely they are not cheap.
My recommendation, if you got sometime, purchase an internal HD from the list shown here “Top 10 Internal Hard Drives” and visit http://www.freenas.org/
Follow the instructions to setup your own Linux based NAS solution. You’ll have your own NAS storage device up and running no time.
If you’re still interested in vendor based NAS storage system for your environment, you can contact the manufacturer websites listed below and pick the best most fit for your budget and requirements. To get more info visit List of NAS manufacturers on wikipedia
