I recently did a switch of Windows to Ubuntu and then upgraded to Fiesty Fawn (7.04) earlier this week. I must say, Ubuntu rocks but has it’s drawbacks. I hate to give Windows any credit when it comes to better performance, but unfortunately out of the box, a Windows XP system for example does perform faster than a default install of Ubuntu. That does not mean Ubuntu cannot be tweaked to boost performance to surpass Windows.
We’ve compiled a list of resources that can be used to improve performance on your Ubuntu operating system.
- Hacking Ubuntu to Improve Performance - This article includes various hacks to boost Ubuntu’s performance, such as viewing running processes, identifying resources, finding process startups, tuning kernel parameters, and speeding up boot time.
- Ultimate Ubuntu performance tweaking guide - Detailed step by step instructions on what to do in order to improve performance on your system.

In my case Festy is faster or th same. I didn’t notis any differens in speed. When you install you’re favorite apps and games Ubuntu stay the same but Windows plums and get really slow.
Windows is acctually faster with Virtualbox in linux than native for me right now.
my Ubuntu seems faster than Windows XP
Windows XP out of the box has no software to use. After 2 months of use typically slows down terribly.
No Vista for me.

Brilliant. Many thanks for your work & time
I wonder how you can say that XP is faster than Ubuntu?
On my work laptop (a Dell Centrino 1.6GHz 1GB RAM) I have both Ubuntu and Windows XP, both with latest updates and not tweaks.
Windows XP is so slow in the following thing:
- starting up the machine
- logging in
- launching Office application and modifying documents (could be due to the anti-virus, but I do not have the rights to deactivate it)
- switching from an application to another. Why, ho why does XP put some application in the swap whereas I still have plenty of memory space! This makes things so slow…
The only thing where XP is faster is with 3D. I have a ATI Mobile Radeon 9000 card which is slow on all system, but still XP is faster than Linux in this regard. But as I use this laptop for work only, I could not care less
The good thing with XP? It reminds me of the old days where I had time to go and grab a coffee while it is starting up. And I have time so sip it while launching the necessary office applications. So you start slowly in the morning waking up

With Ubuntu I do not have this chance anymore
I’ve got the latest version of ubuntu. Great Stuff!
great howto list.
Ubuntu is not the fastest linux distro, but I find it faster than WinXP. However I use xubuntu which is _almost_ as easy to use as ubuntu but comes with a light desktop.
Thanks for the list! Some of them I’ve already seen, but surely even more to try.
As far as questions on speed, I recently installed kubuntu feisty on my wife’s laptop (dell, approx. 1GHz, 512MB ram), a second HD.
Interested to see the difference, I put both XP and kubuntu to the stopwatch test. The XP harddrive (been installed for a while) boots in about 60 seconds, and finishes with wireless, etc at about 70 seconds.
The kubuntu drive (auto logon) took 105 seconds on a completely fresh install. After doing the “simple” performance tips in the “butterfly” guide, I shaved it down to about 85 seconds. Still a little slower, but quite close.
Starting Office (v11?) on the XP drive after a fresh boot took about 5 seconds. OpenOffice under kubuntu was down to 10 seconds after turning off the java runtime option (listed in one of the guides).
Rather long-winded, but hopefully illustrates what the author probably meant by “slower”. Of course, I’d never dream of trying to run Vista on that hardware… =)
Echoing others, really impressed with the newest incarnation of ubuntu!

Upstairs I run 2 pc’s, one with a tweaked WinXP on a DualCore and one with a untweaked Ubuntu on a Sempron 2600. I start them up at the same moment: I get a workable machine the same time! It is not when WinXP shows you a screen that the machine is ready, far from: all the necessary security is stil working and demanding full processor capability.

Off course XP is faster that a default setup of Ubuntu. XP came out in 2001 and Ubuntu is a latest OS with much more visual candy.
Don’t compare Ubuntu with XP. Compare with Vista and then tell me who’s faster.
