What is so special about screen? If you’re a command line freak and usually work on several things at a time then screen can have a very special place in your life. It can multiply one shell prompt into several allowing you to run IRC on first window, Vi on the second, Reading man pages on third, browsing sites via Lynx on fourth and reading your emails on 5th window and so on.
You can have unlimited windows open, you can lock each with a secret key if you step away. You can make 2 screens into one by dividing your screen into top and bottom. You can configure and compile an open source application on top window while you read the damn README and INSTALL files at the bottom window. You can do so many things that you wouldn’t want to get off your ass to do anything else in life. SCREEN IS ADDICTING. It is the tool of every proper Unix geek out there.
Another amazing thing about screen is that you can leave in ‘detached’ mode. Meaning, you detach your damn terminal using screen and logout and it still would not interrupt everything that you were doing in your screen session. All you’d have to do is ’screen -r’ to attach your terminal to screen again to start exactly where you left off!
You must be wondering with all this babbling about screen utility and I still haven’t shown you how to work around with screen.
