The Gutsy Experience

November 26, 2007 |

This blog mostly writes about Linux related stuff. However, we occasionally mention the shortcomings of Linux operating system compared to Windows and Mac. Our most recent article, Linux is not so simple, got a bit popular among users of both sides of the world. I mentioned things like Ubuntu takes longer to start up and wireless is a pain to get working and even use properly. That was Feisty Fawn (7.04).

This article is about Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) and let me tell you all my beloved readers. I’m impressed! Not only was I impressed with the painless installation and setup but I was also pleased with how much quicker the boot up process was! Not to mention the detecting of my wireless device and automatically attaching itself to my neighbors wifi signal. That was brilliant! I had almost given up on reinstalling Linux over and over because of my display issues, boot-up issues, wireless issues and so on but I am glad I gave it another shot.

Actually, the above paragraph is not entirely accurate. The above paragraph is what I wished it had been like because I still had issues installing Gutsy. I have a dell 1505 with ATI drivers. Yes, I’m not the only one with horrible display problems but apparently it seems I’m the only one whining about it. After Gutsy was released, a couple of weeks after the latest ATI drivers were released and after installing that in console mode it fixed my display problems once and for all! Now I get the best resolution for my Ubuntu install.

Second, my wireless as predicted didn’t join the happy party by default. I had to install latest ndiswrapper driver. Once I followed the instructions on how to get it up and running, my wifi was complete. Now I am happy. However, booting up my system was still taking longer than Windows but after looking around, I found some documentation that helped me resolve that issue as well. I still dislike the NetworkManager though. I think it can be made much better because it hangs at times and switching to another access point is almost impossible which is why I installed wifi-radar.

I am positive that the next release will pretty much fix all these minor issues I experienced. I am looking forward to it. But a big applause to everyone who is involved with improving this amazing OS. It’s certainly come a long way. I can see “Windows” on my rear view mirror distancing further and further away as new and better releases of Ubuntu become available.

The following links helped resolve my display, wireless, slow booting issues on Gutsy:

  2. Latest ATI Driver for Linux

  4. Ubuntuforums.org

For anyone who uses Ubuntu, the #4 is the place for all your problems. People within minutes usually respond to your question…Microsoft site doesn’t have a place like this. No one cares about you. On the Ubuntu world, it seems like everyone is a big family with problems here and there but at the end of the day everything turns out OK.

I have the Dell Inspiron 1501 and have had no problems under Gusty. The video card installation was fine with the restricted device manager as was the wireless. I guess the laptops differ more in specs than I would imagine.

I appriciate people wish when installing any software for everything to work out of the box . . .

What i find misleading about this article is that windows does this ? since when, i have always to go and find the drivers on disk or download the latest to make sure the system is running as it should.

While Ubuntu and other varients of Linux can be more difficult to navigate and update hardware being a foriegn OS and less understandable than the main stream, I see no real difference. You either want to use it or not, if you do use it these are not issues and will be treated int he same way that Windows is.

Anyway if anyone knows of a Windows that does this please feel free to point me in the right direction and I am not talking about pre installed OS that you get on a new computer.

    Thanks
